Period drama based on true story occured in 1949 during the deportation of Japanese settlers from Kuril islands.
By the start of WWII, there were 17,000 Japanese settled on three of the islands. In the last days of the war, the Soviet Union took control of the southern islands, and by 1949 deported all of the Japanese residents.
A 1956 Japan-Soviet joint declaration restored diplomatic ties, but a formal declaration of peace could not be reached because of the disputed islands.
